On June 9, 2025, at around 9:00 AM, a tragic accident occurred near Mumbra station in Thane district, Mumbai, on the suburban railway network. Five passengers died, and eight others were injured when commuters fell from overcrowded local trains during peak rush hour.

Cause of the Accident
The incident involved two trains moving in opposite directions—one heading to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and the other toward Kasara. Passengers hanging onto the footboards collided, likely due to bags brushing against each other, causing 10–13 commuters to fall onto the tracks.
Victims and Casualties
Among the deceased was Vicky Mukhyadal, a 34-year-old Government Railway Police constable. Eight injured passengers were rushed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa and Jupiter Hospital. Two remain in critical condition.

Emergency Response
Emergency services were alerted by the Kasara-bound train’s guard around 9:30 AM. The injured were promptly transported to nearby hospitals by 9:50 AM for treatment.
Government and Railway Actions
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the incident as “unfortunate” and ordered an investigation. The Railway Board announced plans to install automatic door-closing systems on all new Mumbai suburban trains and retrofit existing ones to enhance safety.
Broader Context
The accident highlights the ongoing issue of overcrowding on Mumbai’s rail network, which serves over seven million passengers daily. Footboard travel, a common practice during rush hours, remains a significant safety risk.
